The maple garden in the Koshiji area was created around 1896 as a garden for the villa of the Takahashi family, landowners in Kamiya.

The 4,000-square-meter site

is home to many plants, including 150- to 200-year-old maple trees, mountain cherry trees, and azaleas.

The most commonly planted maple, the Iroha maple, is a type of maple that grows wild on the Pacific side of the island from northern Japan to the Kyushu region.
It is believed that the Takahashi family transplanted an excellent variety from Kyoto, where their business activities were located.
It was donated by the former Koshiji Town in 1989. During the fall foliage season, the tree is illuminated at night, providing a fantastic view of the maple trees.

Three tourist attractions, the Momiji-en, Asahi Sake Brewery, and Shorai-kaku, are located next to each other, making it possible to visit all the highlights of Koshiji at once and enjoy a great value for money.
In high season, the area is lit up at night, and the usually quiet area is crowded with many tourists.
This is one of Niigata Prefecture’s most famous autumn foliage viewing spots.

One of the secrets to the beauty of the maple garden is the large number of Iroha maples planted in the garden.

Originally, this is a type of maple that is wild mainly on the Pacific side of the Japanese archipelago, but the Takahashi family took the trouble to transplant an excellent variety from Kyoto.
If you look closely, you will see that some trees have strings tied around them in places. Many 150- to 200-year-old maple trees still remain in the maple garden, spreading their branches.

Not only during the fall foliage season, but also during the cherry blossom season is recommended as many mountain cherry trees are planted.
The beauty of fresh greenery in summer is also exceptional.
