Fukushima Lagoon

Scenic Characteristics The shallow waters of the lagoon are covered with islands of reeds, reminiscent of the original landscape of the Echigo Plain, and in spring, fields of rape blossoms and snow-capped mountains adorn the scenery of the lagoon.

With an area of 260 ha, it is the largest lake named “lagoon” in Niigata Prefecture.

The lake reflecting the Gotou mountain range and the birds, flowers, and people weaving in unison, preserves the original landscape of Niigata from season to season.This nature has been selected as one of the “100 best nature spots in Japan,”the “100 best scenic spots in Niigata,” and the “100 best walking spots.

Landscape Characteristics

The shallow waters of the lagoon are covered with islands of reeds, reminiscent of the original landscape of the Echigo Plain, and in spring, fields of rape blossoms and snow-capped mountains adorn the scenery of the lagoon.

As part of the Fukushima Lagoon river improvement project led by Niigata Prefecture (constructed in 2014-2015), the lake bank embankment was improved, and the embankment normal within the “Water Park Fukushima Lagoon” park was changed from the existing plan.

This design allows visitors to approach the waterside of the lagoon without the feeling that they are crossing an embankment, and does not detract from the distinctive landscape of Fukushima Lagoon, with the Gotou mountain range and the mountains of Iide in the background.

Plants and Animals of Fukushima Lagoon

It is the largest wintering ground in Japan for the great grey-faced bunting, a migratory bird designated as a protected species by the Japanese government.

In addition, more than 220 bird species have been identified.

The Fukushima Lagoon is the northern limit of the rare plant, Onibasu, which is found in only about 70 places in Japan.
