The history of bullfighting in Yamakoshi dates back as far as 1,000 years ago.
Cattle, which have strong legs and backs and can withstand the cold and poor diet, have long been valuable workers for transportation and farming.
It is said that “bulls pushing” took root as a pastime for the people of Yamakoshi through the close relationship between the owners and the bulls.

Yamakoshi’s “bulls’ horns tugging” is characterized by a draw so that the bulls do not get hurt.
The scene of men called “seiko” (men who are in charge of the bullfighting), who poke their horns against each other and separate the bulls to seize the bulls as they violently collide with each other, is also a sight to behold.
The bullfighting and its customs can be seen in the “Echigo Yamakoshi Bullfighting Tournament” organized by the Yamakoshi Bullfighting Association, which overcame the earthquake disaster.
